According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the world’s population will grow by 2.3 billion by 2050 and agricultural production and consumption could be 60% higher than today. Taking into consideration the effects of climate change, feeding an extra two billion people will require innovative solutions.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution has the power to change things but the existing digital divide prevents many farmers from accessing ICT for agriculture. To help farms to transform their business activities to new standards based on integrated digitization of production processes the ITFARM project will create ad hoc educational resources on Agriculture 4.0 for farmers and VET teachers.
In order to do so, the project partners are conducting research to find out the current situation and the latest trends of Smart Agriculture and to identify farmers’ demand for digital technologies, with the aim to develop tailored training programmes to help them to familiarise with cutting-edge technologies in the field of agriculture.
These and other issues were discussed during the first transnational partner meeting of the project, held in Prague on the 21st and 22nd of April. During the meeting, the partners presented their background and experiences in the field of agriculture and discussed the planning of the upcoming activities, which are aimed at collecting data for the development of new materials and toolkits. The meeting was very important to define all the necessary aspects of the initial research and to plan in detail the project’s next steps. In the coming months, partners will continue cooperating to raise awareness of the potential of digital technologies in agriculture.
