Can sexual violence and harassment against women and girls be prevented?<\/strong> Can digital media, which commonly reproduce gender stereotypes be used for prevention?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CONVEY<\/a>\u00a0project has sought to answer these questions through a\u00a0four-sessions train the trainer course for teachers<\/strong>\u00a0which took place in all partner countries of the project:\u00a0Italy, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland and UK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Italy, in November 2018 a total of\u00a04 secondary schools from Palermo participated in the training<\/strong>\u00a0including\u00a0Educandato Statale Maria Adelaide<\/a>,\u00a0Liceo Classico Vittorio Emanuele II<\/a>,\u00a0Istituto Magistrale Statale Regina Margherita<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0IISS Ernesto Ascione<\/a>. The training took place in the heart of Palermo\u2019s historical centre at the Liceo Classico Vittorio Emanuele II where\u00a0teachers worked on fostering respect of women\u2019s right, dignity in schools, prevention of gender stereotyping, types of gender-based violence<\/strong>\u00a0and the sexualization of people in the digital society, reporting and procedures for reporting at school and the concept of consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of the topics were addressed through formal and especially\u00a0non-formal education activities<\/strong>, which are part of the\u00a0CONVEY Manual<\/strong>\u00a0collecting the Train-the-Trainer Material. Teachers were also introduced to the \u2018CONVEY NOT A GAME\u2019<\/a>\u00a0videogame. This \u201cpoint-and-click\u201d game of the CONVEY project features an investigation style of gameplay, highlighting both the criminal nature of abuses and at the same time supporting the agency of the players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the sessions, teachers planned a 10-session workshop for their respective students aged 14-18<\/strong> which aspired to change the behavior of young people. The Pilot Programme: Workshops for Young People, with activities drawn from the Handbook for Students\u2019 Workshops<\/strong> developed by CONVEY project, took place from January to April 2019 in all partner countries. Students were involved in digital education regarding gender-based violence, harassment and sexualization in digital media<\/strong> topics through the online game and non-formal activities. Some students shared their thoughts on the training:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018During the workshops of the CONVEY project I think I have changed my mind about many things (\u2026). This training including the \u2018Convey Not a Game\u2019 made me reflect a lot about some difficult topics to face and which should be more frequently addressed in schools.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em>\u2018We had the chance to face sensitive topics in an interactive and non-boring way, through games, role play and non-formal education. The CONVEY project has made me reflect a lot about gender-based violence and gender stereotypes and it has given me new strategies to deal with them.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/em>\u2018In particular, \u201cConvey not a game\u201d has made me more conscious about my rights and those of women regarding consent and intimate relations\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to measure the impact of the workshops, a set of questionnaires<\/strong> were delivered at different stages throughout the training delivery, in order to measure the attitude and the behavioral change in students. Results will be available soon. Stay tuned!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

CONVEY -\u00a0<\/a>Counteracting sexual violence and harassment: Engaging Youth in schools in digital education on gender stereotyping<\/a>\u00a0is co-funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mission of\u00a0the CONVEY<\/a> project<\/strong>\u00a0has focused around finding a way to do just that, and being creative about it, so that lay people, and especially young people who are not familiar with\u00a0gender issues<\/strong>\u00a0can be inspired to learn and ultimately\u00a0change their attitudes and behaviours towards gender stereotypes and the sexualisation of women (and men!), especially in digital media<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
