Every year,\u00a0<strong>from 16 to September 22<\/strong>, the European citizens celebrate the\u00a0<strong>sustainable mobility<\/strong>\u00a0and launching a message of\u00a0<strong>change and renewal of our styles of life<\/strong>.<br \/>This year European Mobility Week is focusing on\u00a0<strong><em>multimodality<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0- the mixing of transport modes within the same journey or for different trips. The citizens are required to consciously choose new ways of mobility, to improve the quality of their city lives and to stimulate the choice of a style of life I cure and sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YLe81FSVON4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" title=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Youtu<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YLe81FSVON4\" title=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">be<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the field of sustainable urban mobility, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/activeenvironments.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" title=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><strong>SPAcE - Supporting Policy and Action for Active Environments<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0project has been selected as a \"<strong>success story<\/strong>\" by a panel of experts from the Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SPAcE aimed to integrate active transport programmes (i.e. walking to school, cycle to work schemes etc.) into public policy across the European Union. The overall aim of the SPAcE project was to make the healthy choice the easy choice through creating sustainable urban active environments (UActivE) in cities and towns across the Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on quality, relevance and results, the SPAcE project has been selected due to its impact, contribution to policy-making, innovative results and creative approach in increasing population physical activity levels across European towns and cities. It also has been recognised as a source of inspiration for other projects wanting to integrate active transport programmes into public policy across the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our main role in\u00a0SPAcE\u00a0has been to lead the development of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/resources\/space-uactive-action-plan-palermo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Action Plan<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>for the city of Palermo<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>address\u00a0low levels of physical activity in the community<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>promote physical activity-friendly environments<\/strong>. The\u00a0<strong>Action Plan<\/strong>\u00a0focused on\u00a0<strong>addressing child overweight and obesity levels<\/strong>\u00a0through the development of walking and cycling programmes and the improvement of school recreational facilities to\u00a0<strong>increase physical activity in and out of school<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two main goals of the Plan have been developed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>School Urban Trails Programme<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>\u2013 Urban trekking from home to school to playground<\/strong>\u00a0that encourages children to walk and cycle to school and areas of play with the use of Walking Guides, mobile app and incorporating historical monuments of the city within the urban trails;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An\u00a0<strong>Active School Districts<\/strong>\u00a0programme that aims to make use of school recreational facilities during after school hours and improving the facilities offered by school buildings for maintaining a physical active friendly environment within local communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/resources\/space-uactive-action-plan-palermo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Download SPAcE: Action Plan Palermo<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, Palermo&nbsp;have been selected as an example<strong>&nbsp;of good practices across 10 EU Cities on physical activity in urban environments.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically,\u00a0Pedestrian Street project in\u00a0the City Centre is one of the Italian case studies presented in\u00a0the report\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/activeenvironments.eu\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" title=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><em>Environments for physical activity in Europe a review of evidence and examples of practice<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0Besides the experimentation of the pedestrian area, two more events involved the citizens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The \u201c<strong>Choose sport for good health\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0initiative, that trasformed\u00a0Foro Italico into an open-air gymnasium,\u00a0where twenty disciplines of different sporting activities were provided;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201cCar Free day\u201d in Cefal\u00f9<\/strong>\u00a0(Palermo), organized to participate in the overall initiative of European Mobility Week that showed the city commitment\u00a0to reduce the number of cars on the streets and promote sustainable ways of travelling and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution and congestion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/activeenvironments.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\" title=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><strong>SPAcE - Supporting Policy and Action for Active Environments<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is funded by\u00a0<strong>Erasmus+ Sport: Support to Collaborative Partnerships programme\u00a0<\/strong>aims to integrate active transport programmes (i.e. walking to school, cycle to work schemes etc.) into public policy across the European Union.
