Is it possible to use storytelling as an educational tool <\/strong>to favor migrants\u2019 integration in local communities<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0LISTEN<\/a>\u00a0training course\u00a0was held from\u00a0January 22nd till 26t<\/strong>h at the premises of the\u00a0Verein Multikulturell<\/a>\u00a0in Innsbruck, Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The course involved 20 trainers, counsellors and social workers<\/strong> from UK, Greece, Sweden, Italy, Austria and Germany<\/strong> who work with refugees<\/strong> and other people who were forced to leave their countries and to migrate to Europe, interested in storytelling and broadcasting techniques<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The five-day course covered four topics that make up the LISTEN approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Intercultural, ethical and psycho-social basics for working with refugees<\/strong>: how to deal with\u00a0language barriers<\/strong>,\u00a0gender roles<\/strong>,\u00a0different educational backgrounds and traumatisation<\/strong>, but also how to create preconditions in a group to open up to\u00a0exchange stories<\/strong>\u00a0with each other.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Storytelling methods to empower refugees<\/strong>: after a brief theoretical introduction to the forms and potentials of storytelling, it was tested practical application of various storytelling methods (e.g. biographical, for language learning, stories for reflection), to be used in different social and learning contexts. This also includes finding stories and presenting stories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. How to make radio<\/strong>: the LISTEN consortium considers radio as an important and fruitful medium to support the integration of refugees by offering a platform to share stories. Trainers learnt how to make use of this medium with their learners, in regard to technical skills but also how to conceptualise such approaches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Competence development and learning<\/strong>\u00a0through storytelling and creating radio programmes. The\u00a0LEVEL5 approach<\/strong>\u00a0was introduced in order to supports structured reflection on individual competence developments gained in non-formal and informal learning contexts (like LISTEN) and how to apply this method with refugees to help them become aware of their competences and to evidence this development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The last day was dedicated to collaboratively develop ideas<\/strong> how to implement the LISTEN approach into the own working environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    About LISTEN<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    LISTEN \u2013 Learning Intercultural Storytelling<\/a>  is a two year project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, Key Action 2 \u2013 Strategic Partnerships in the field of Adult education. The LISTEN project aims at introducing storytelling approaches and techniques to a radio environment as a binding factor which brings social and personal benefits for refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The partnership is made up seven partners out of six European countries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
