Action Plan results to make Palermo a better city for physical activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How to <strong>promote active urban environments<\/strong> and <strong>increase population physical activity levels<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Our main role in <a href=\"http:\/\/activeenvironments.eu\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">SPAcE \u2013 Supporting Policy and Action for Active Environments<\/a> has been to lead the development of the <strong>UActivE Action Plan<\/strong> <strong>for the city of Palermo<\/strong> in order to <strong>address low levels of physical activity in the community<\/strong> and <strong>promote physical activity-friendly environments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Using a <strong>co-productive model<\/strong>, we collaborated with local communities as well as local government together with school teachers, students, mobility associations and architects.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Action Plan<\/strong> focuses on <strong>addressing child overweight and obesity levels<\/strong> through the development of programmes to <strong>increase physical activity in and out of school<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The two main goals of the Plan have been developed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong><em>School Urban Trails Programme &#8211; Urban trekking from home to school to playground<\/em><\/strong> that encourages children to walk and cycle to school and areas of play with the use of <strong><em>Walking Guides<\/em><\/strong>, mobile app and incorporating historical monuments of the city within the urban trails;<\/li>\n<li>an <strong><em>Active School Districts<\/em><\/strong> <strong>programme<\/strong> that aims to make use of school recreational facilities during after school hours and improving the facilities offered by school buildings for maintaining a physical active friendly environment within local communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>final launch event in Italy for the SPAcE project<\/strong> took place on <strong>20<sup>th<\/sup> December 2017<\/strong> at <strong>Moltivolti<\/strong>, a multicultural centre in Palermo.<\/p>\n<p>We organised a meeting with <strong>the students and teachers of \u201cBenedetto Croce\u201d Lyceum<\/strong> that developed a <strong>collection of urban trails from home to school <\/strong>during the last months to support the Plans implementation and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>During the event, not only did we present the work done by the students in the classroom in developing their own School Urban Trails Programme, but we also presented the final three outputs of the project to the students, teachers and members of the Working Group that have helped to develop the Plan along with key stakeholders in school education and sustainable mobility.<\/p>\n<p>You can now read the final UActivE Plan for the city of Palermo developed by CESIE, <strong><em>Palermo \u2013 home of active and healthy school communities<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/media\/uactive-action-plan-palermo-italy-cesie.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The final <strong>UActivE Action Plans<\/strong> developed for <a href=\"http:\/\/activeenvironments.eu\/media\/uactive-action-plan-trikala-greece.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Trikala (Greece)<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/activeenvironments.eu\/media\/uactive-action-plan-castilla-la-mancha-toledo-spain.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Castilla-La Mancha (Spain)<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/activeenvironments.eu\/media\/uactive-action-plan-brasov-romania.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brasov (Romania)<\/strong><\/a><strong> and <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/activeenvironments.eu\/media\/uactive-action-plan-tukums-latvia.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tukums (Latvia)<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> are now available on the SPAcE project website together with the final 3 outputs of the project:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a Support to Collaborative Partnerships programme<\/strong> aims to integrate active transport programmes (i.e. walking to school, cycle to work schemes etc.) into public policy across the European Union.
