Memory<\/strong> as a means to resignify spaces<\/strong>. Establishing horizontal relationships between institutions and citizens<\/strong> to create cultural participatory platforms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

These were two of the topics discussed during the book launch of “CON IL SUD #unfuturomaivisto – Visioni e storie<\/strong> di un\u2019Italia che<\/strong>\u00a0pu\u00f2 cambiare”<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(“CON IL SUD #anunprecedentedfuture \u2013 visions and stories from the changing face of Italy”), a volume sponsored by Fondazione CON IL SUD<\/strong><\/a> and edited by Andrea Di Consoli<\/strong> and Yari Selvetella<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Held at Ecomuseum \u2013 Mare Memoria Viva<\/strong><\/a>, the panel discussion was the closing event of Nuove Pratiche Fest<\/strong><\/a>, a festival which has been promoting for three years the importance of implementing innovative activities to stress the educational role of cultural heritage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The representative of Mare Memoria Viva foundation, Cristina Alga<\/strong> was the first speaker. She started describing the urban renewal of former Sant\u2019Erasmo Locomotive Depot<\/strong>, now turned into the first ecomuseum in Palermo. The ecomuseum houses a unique interactive exhibit<\/strong> devoted to the history of the sea<\/strong>, outlining Palermo urban and social transformations<\/strong>. According to Alga, this urban revitalization<\/strong> led also to human revitalization<\/strong>, as citizens enjoyed exploring the collection.<\/p>\n

The book launch celebrates ten years of Fondazione CON IL SUD, as pointed out by President Carlo Borgomeo<\/strong>. During this decade, the foundation implemented over one thousand projects<\/strong> – 240 in Sicily and 40 in Palermo<\/strong>. In addition, he commented on the concept of “an unprecedented future”<\/strong>. According to Borgomeo, the relationship between urban renewal and public authorities requires a further analysis. The purpose of the book is to subvert the dominant culture<\/strong> which has been neglecting the priority of issues such as education, youth and juvenile condition, common goods and social welfare<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the contrary, Fondazione CON IL SUD has been working towards acknowledging the importance of these issues. Social cohesion<\/strong> is, in fact, the only way to achieve true development<\/strong>. For this reason, one of the Foundation\u2019s goals has always been to promote and generate narratives capable of changing the world<\/strong>, such as the stories of Danilo Dolci, Renata Fonte, Lorenzo Milani, Adriano Olivetti and Franco Basaglia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The discussion on the book content was enriched by three tales on urban and human revitalizations, generated by activities aimed at raising awareness and promoting cultural intervention.<\/p>\n

First, Tiziana Giordano (CESIE)<\/strong> talked about the conference \u201cSchool Plus: from early school leaving to \u00a0school inclusion: ideas and proposals\u201d<\/strong>. \u00a0The event allowed participants to evaluate eight projects<\/strong> aimed at tackling early school leaving<\/strong>. Financed by Fondazione CON IL SUD, the projects were implemented in Palermo between 2014 and 2016<\/strong>. The conference inspired relevant stakeholder to plan effective strategies which might foster social inclusion<\/strong> and local development<\/strong>. It is necessary to restore a sense of community<\/strong> and strengthen social ties in order to create fruitful conditions which might support the growth of youngsters and allow them to pursue their dream of a better future<\/strong>. In reality, participatory planning relies on people, therefore third sector organizations and institutions should facilitate this process.<\/p>\n

The director of MAXXI museum<\/strong> (Rome), Giovanna Melandri<\/strong>, also participated in the panel discussion. She insisted on the importance of the cooperation<\/strong> amongst cultural institutions so as to promote social inclusion. In this regard, national measures should be implemented in the system of education<\/strong> so as to improve the social conditions, especially for youngsters. Melandri praised social enterprises<\/strong> in Southern Italy<\/strong>, as active models and signs of culture change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Alessandro Imbriaco and Fabio Severo<\/strong> introduced \u201cCorpi di Reato. Un\u2019archeologia visiva dei fenomeni mafiosi nell\u2019Italia contemporanea\u201d<\/strong> (“Bodies of Evidence. Visual archeology of Mafia phenomena in Contemporary Italy”), a photoessay<\/strong> created along with Tommaso Bonaventura<\/strong>. The aim of the project is to show Mafia phenomena across Italian regions<\/strong>, which have been documented in a visual research<\/strong> on suburbs<\/strong> resulting in a catalogue of “architectural monsters”<\/strong> and relics of the war on Mafia.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, Letizia Battaglia<\/strong>, who produced many iconic photos<\/strong> that have come to represent Palermo social life<\/strong>, emphasized the necessity of integrating suburban areas<\/strong> and their inhabitants in cultural processes: promoting literacy, disseminating artistic practices<\/strong> and above removing kids from street life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Art, social change, cultural practices and innovation are part of the experiences collected by Fondazione CON IL SUD.<\/strong> They prove that Southern Italy can change. Visions can become reality if we commit to improve the quality of life<\/strong> and integrate marginal areas.<\/p>\n

The royalties will be donated to Liberos<\/a><\/strong>, a Sardinian organisation which implemented an innovative project aimed at promoting reading as a means of social inclusion in small and isolated communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
