On March 8, International Women's Day is celebrated around the world to remember women\u2019s social and political achievements, to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities, but at the same time it is a chance for us to reflect on the discrimination and violence women still suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The origins of this event can be traced back in 1908, when a group of workers of the Cotton<\/em> textile industry in New York went on strike to protest against their work conditions. After a few days of conflict, precisely on March 8, the owner, in retaliation, blocked all the exit doors of the factory. On that day, a fire broke out and killed 129 of them.
