\"diggingdeep_zen\"<\/a>After the first two events held at the end of April and May, on the 23rd<\/sup> of July a new local workshop of \u201cDigging Deep\u201d took place. The international project, co-funded by the European Commission with the framework of the programme \u201cYouth in Action, Action 4.3\u201d, is involving young people in the implementation of urban gardens and related activities in the four partner countries (China, Ghana, Italy, Slovenia).<\/p>\n

The Italian participants gave life to a joyful and creative afternoon by involving young people coming from ZEN. Thanks to the collaboration of the \u201cAssociazione Lievito\u201d, which has been working for years in order to rehabilitate this suburban neighborhood of Palermo, more than 10 children from 8 to 13 years old had the opportunity to familiarize with the field of urban vegetable gardens.<\/p>\n

The vegetable garden of the project is located within the shared CODIFAS urban garden, close to the ZEN. Just right there, young agronomists and educators presented and illustrated products such as aubergines, courgettes, corn, tomatos, oregan, ecc, and explained how to seed, look after and collect them. After this theoretical session, thanks to which the participants had the chance to smell, touch and taste what they usually find in the supermarkets, a practical workshop taught them how to build small vertical vegetable gardens than can be easily reproduced in the walls of the houses or in the schools. All the participants, supplied with small shovels, scissors and plastic bottles, prepared a box by using recycled plastic, then filled the bottle with soil and straw, planted a seed and watered it. Eventually, they tied all the bottles together by using a rope and a cord, realizing a vertical vegetable garden.<\/p>\n

The afternoon ended with a group photograph, a lot of smiles, dirty hands and the opportunity to carry home the products of the urban garden as a souvenir of the experience.<\/p>\n
