This is the Message pronounced by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for World Population Day on the 11th <\/sup>of July 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorld Population Day\u201d was established by the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) in 1989 as a consequence of the \u201cDay of Five Billion people\u201d, marked on the 11th<\/sup> of July 1987. The event is celebrated yearly to raise awareness on global population issues and on the impact they have on development and on the environment, focusing on gender equality, family planning, poverty, maternal health and human rights. The day is celebrated worldwide by institutions, governments, business groups, community and non-profit organizations in many ways. It is promoted by UNFPA which encourages activities and events such as seminar discussions, educational information sessions and essay competitions to help reflect upon the increase in population and see how it can affect the life of individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the World Population Day 2011, the UN Population Fund launched a campaign aimed to foster public opinion to seize the opportunities and to take up the challenges arising in a world populated by 7 billion people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
