""The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded as a recognition of cultural and or scientific advances. October the 12th , quite surprisingly for many, is a day that will remain in the world history since the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union.

The justification for the much contested reasons and timing of such an award have been underlined by Nobel committee president Thorbjoern Jagland. He acknowledged the prima facie facts that over 6 decades the European Union has managed to transform a war- torn continent into a continent of peace and cooperation.

Starting from the premise that the whole project was inspired by the grand idea of Jean Monnet and Robert Shumann to put to a halt centuries of animosity and rivalry between France and Germany, it appears more than obvious that peace was the main incentive for the architects of the project.

It is unquestionable that since 1945 such reconciliation, peace and prosperity have become a true reality. And even if skeptics point out the economic crisis as epitomizing the demise or the failure of the European Union, a more detailed analysis of the history of the European project and the current state will unequivocally reveal that the latter involves the effective ongoing cooperation and partnership between member states.

A further reference has been given to the admission of new members in the European Union with the main precondition being the introduction of full- fledged democracy. As a result, the division between East and West Europe has significantly decreased if not came to an end.

Furthermore, in the long term, the admission of Croatia as a member next year, the opening of negotiations with Montenegro and granting of a candidate status to Serbia undoubtedly will result in strengthening the process of reconciliation between the nations on the Balkans.

The possibility of EU membership for Turkey will also be a means towards advancing peace, democratic rule and respect for human rights. Therefore, it appears that the democratic peace theory as promoted by Emmanuel Kant and liberal thinker Thomas Paine might contribute to decreasing the levels of uncertainty, rivalry and war on an international scale.

Senior EU figures were truly delighted from the award. As EU commission President José Manuel Barroso exclaimed “”It is a great honour for the whole of the EU, all 500 million citizens, to be awarded the 2012 Nobel Peace prize.” Unequivocally, the latter suggests that the work of nongovernmental organizations and civil society should not be underestimated. As such, the role of CESIE is pivotal since it is strongly committed to bringing about peace, eradication of rivalry between nations and promotion of transnational cooperation, and advancement of democracy. It has a 11-year dedication to the idea of the promotion of active involvement of people, increasing the value of peace and cooperation on regional, national and international level and celebrating diversity by promoting the individual heritage and beliefs.

For all the above reasons, the Nobel Prize appears to be well-deserved even in times of economic crisis since it represents the “fraternity between nations and amounts to a form of the ‘peace congresses’ to which Alfred Nobel refers as criteria for the Peace Prize in his 1895 will”.

Time will show, it might be that the new Nobel Prize provides the so much needed new spirit to the EU enterprise in times of stringent financial cuts and austerity measures as the prize itself implicitly recognizes that Monnet’s ideal of “ever Closer Union” was not too idealistic and faulty.
