Today, 17 May, is the International Day against Homophobia & Transphobia (IDAHO). This date was chosen in order to celebrate the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s May 1990 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders (http://www.dayagainsthomophobia.org/Why-May-17th,47), that became a historic step towards considering freedom of sexual orientation and gender identity as a fundamental basic human right. Thousands of people worldwide will come together today to hold activities and re-affirm their commitment to ending the persecution faced by LGBT groups.

Despite of the fact that situation in Europe is improving and some of the European countries (Sweden, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, UK) protect their gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens against hate crimes and afford them the same rights as other citizens (http://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/headlines/content/20120510STO44846/html/Day-against-homophobia-the-situation-in-the-EU-is-improving), bullying against homosexuals, bisexual and transgender people, especially in their youth, still appears in many countries all over the world. Unfortunately, a vivid example of such attack as slain of Uganda gay activist or murder of 6 trans women in Honduras in 2 months proofs again that even more effort should be put together to protect thousands of people suffering from homophobia and transphobia everyday.

The European Parliament is already actively working for it and today, on the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia , the President Martin Schulz stated:

“I welcome the new momentum worldwide in the debate for the protection, recognition and advancement of civil rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender persons.” (http://www.europarl.europa.eu/)

Together with other 50 Members of the European Parliament he joined forces telling LGBT teenagers they are working to make things better and to put an end to homophobia and transphobia, so they produced a video (http://www.lgbt-ep.eu/press-releases/european-leaders-it-gets-better/ ) aimed at inspiring hope in young people facing harassment.

The fight against homophobia is not only the business of gay, bi or trans people, but the full responsibility of public authorities, the society as a whole, including each of us!
