We live in an era where technology and the internet have become an integral part of everyday life<\/sup>. They are now essential tools for communication, work, learning, and access to information<\/sup>. But for these tools to truly be within everyone\u2019s reach, they must also be safe, accessible, and understandable<\/strong><\/sup>. Although many young people have grown up in a digital world, this does not mean that everyone has developed the ability to critically navigate<\/strong> the vast sea of available information<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The constant presence of digital content does not automatically translate into the capacity to understand, evaluate, and transform it into meaningful knowledge<\/strong><\/sup>. This is where digital media literacy<\/strong> comes in\u2014a competence that concerns not only young people, but especially those who work in education<\/sup>. Teachers play a central role in the learning process and must be equipped to face the complexities of the digital world<\/strong> together with their students<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond Technique: A Critical Literacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Digital media literacy is not just about using digital tools or platforms; it\u2019s about how we interpret messages<\/strong>, construct meaning, and relate to others through media. It is a form of cultural and critical literacy<\/strong> that lies at the heart of contemporary pedagogy. Today, teaching also means engaging with digital environments that influence students\u2019 thoughts, emotions, and relationships. Ignoring this dimension would mean allowing school to become detached from the present<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the context in which the European project Teachers 4.0 Digital<\/strong> was developed<\/sup>. The project aims to provide tools and training pathways for both in-service and future teachers, offering a structured and holistic approach<\/strong> to digital education<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training for In-Service Teachers <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s teachers work in increasingly complex environments: diverse classrooms, hybrid learning settings, and the widespread use of social media, alongside the spread of fake news<\/strong> and the polarisation of public opinion<\/sup>. Yet, many have not received specific training to navigate these challenges<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A trained teacher can help students develop critical thinking<\/strong>, recognise manipulated information, and use digital media as tools for inclusion and active participation<\/strong><\/sup>. In this way, schools can become democratic spaces where media are subjects of reflection and analysis<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pre-Service Training: A Crucial Opportunity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Initial preparation for future teachers is a crucial stage for building a strong professional identity<\/sup>. However, in many universities, reflection on digital media use is still marginal or relegated to optional courses<\/strong><\/sup>. Teachers 4.0 Digital<\/strong> seeks to address this gap by promoting the integration of digital media literacy as a transversal competence<\/strong> through<\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
