Imagine a more human, inclusive and participative school<\/strong>, where empathy and listening are not just words, but the foundation of every lesson.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CARB \u2013 Creative Approach to Resilience and Bravery in Secondary Education<\/a> project was created to innovate educational practices in secondary schools through inclusive and participatory approaches that promote empathy, active listening, and emotional well-being. At the heart of the project lies the CARB Toolkit<\/a>, a pedagogical resource designed to guide teachers through a formative and experimental process that combines the methodology of deep democracy with art as a means of personal and collective expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Toolkit includes a manual with four educational activities based on the deep democracy methodology \u2013 an approach that values diverse opinions and dialogue among all voices in a group \u2013 as well as four explanatory videos to support implementation in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of six months, a group of secondary school teachers from each partner country took part in an experimental training programme, gradually integrating the Toolkit\u2019s activities into their work with students. The process was supported by online supervision sessions with expert trainers, offering space for peer dialogue and reflection on the transformative potential of these practices. The activities proved to be powerful tools for fostering communication, strengthening relational dynamics, and creating a climate of trust and openness, both among colleagues and with students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final event of the project took place on May 8\u20139 in Palermo, at the \u201cPietro Piazza\u201d Hospitality School, one of the project\u2019s partner institutions. During these two days of seminars, participating teachers deepened their understanding of the methodologies, shared experiences with peers, and reflected on the results achieved. The interactive activities proposed during the meeting \u2013 including group games, creative workshops, and discussion moments \u2013 reflected the spirit of the Toolkit, fostering authentic connections among participants and mirroring the dynamics previously experienced with their students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most significant elements of the project was the use of photography as an educational tool. Guided by specific themes proposed within the project, teachers engaged their students in the creation of photographs aimed at expressing emotions, inner states, and personal reflections. Each photo was accompanied by a short caption explaining its meaning and underlying message. The photographs produced by the Italian schools were later printed and exhibited in a photo exhibition inaugurated during the seminar in Palermo. The exhibition offered participants and visitors a powerful glimpse into the inner world of young people, highlighting the role of art as a privileged channel for emotional expression and communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feedback gathered during the final event clearly shows that the CARB project left a meaningful impact on the educational paths of the schools involved. Teachers reported a more peaceful and cooperative classroom atmosphere, increased student participation and active listening, and the discovery of new tools to address the daily challenges of teaching. The experience also demonstrated the high adaptability of the proposed activities, which proved effective in a wide variety of school contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CARB thus confirms itself as a valuable ally in promoting resilience, empathy, and courage in schools. A small success that achieved all its intended goals and, we hope, will continue to bear fruit by inspiring new educational practices that are more human, inclusive, and participatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
