For five months, I had the incredible opportunity to live and volunteer in Palermo, Sicily. I resided in an apartment near the historical town centre, sharing the space with seven other volunteers from different European countries, all aged between 18 and 30. This experience was more than just a volunteering project; it was a journey of growth, learning, and cultural exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each volunteer collaborated with CESIE on different activities in various local centres in Palermo. For example, among others, I carried out some activities in a refugee centre and spent a few afternoons in a local kindergarten for children. My activities in these centres were different, ranging from working at the reception area and assisting with the clothes distribution and breakfast service to helping with Italian classes for beginners, supporting job seekers, and even acting as a translator during legal consultations. At the local afterschool daycare, I worked with children from primary and early middle school, assisting them with their homework and helping the staff with activities. This was my first experience working with children in such a setting, and I learned how to better connect with younger people and communicate effectively with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite being new to these environments and roles, I always felt supported by my supervisors and coworkers. Their guidance made the transition into these responsibilities smooth and rewarding. Through my work, I learned a lot\u2014not just about the tasks at hand but about people, cultures, and perspectives I had never encountered before. I listened to stories that deeply impacted me, broadening my understanding of the world and making me more grateful for the privileges I was born with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond volunteering, I had the chance to fully immerse myself in Sicilian life. Coming from Belgium, I appreciated the warm weather that Sicily offers, even in winter. Arriving at the end of summer, I often went to the beach with my roommates and other volunteers, soaking in the sun and the breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Together, we explored the stunning Sicilian coast, hiked through scenic trails, travelled to nearby towns and cities, and indulged in the rich and diverse local cuisine. These experiences helped us bond as a group, creating friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking back, my time in Palermo was transformative. The combination of meaningful work, cultural immersion, and new friendships made it an experience I will always cherish. I left Sicily more open-minded, empathetic, and aware of the world around me. This journey reinforced the importance of stepping out of one\u2019s comfort zone, embracing new challenges, and appreciating the diversity of human experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Volunteering abroad is not just about helping others; it is about personal growth, learning, and forming connections that transcend borders. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and highly encourage anyone considering a similar experience to take the leap\u2014you won\u2019t regret it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
