{"id":136228,"date":"2024-09-03T11:25:07","date_gmt":"2024-09-03T09:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cesie.org\/?p=136228"},"modified":"2024-09-03T11:28:34","modified_gmt":"2024-09-03T09:28:34","slug":"scirearly-data-early-leaving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/higher-education-and-research\/scirearly-data-early-leaving\/","title":{"rendered":"SCIREARLY Report: data and strategies against early leaving of education and training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Early Leaving of Education and Training represents one of the most urgent and complex challenges in the European educational landscape.<\/strong> This phenomenon not only compromises the individual future of students, limiting their job and social opportunities, but also has a significant impact on the economic and social development of communities because, as Christiaan Neethling Barnard once said, \"<em>A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.<\/em>\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Union has set a goal to reduce the percentage of dropouts in the education and training system to below 9% by 2030 (<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/EN\/legal-content\/summary\/strategic-framework-for-european-cooperation-in-education-and-training-towards-the-european-education-area-and-beyond.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training towards the European Education Area and beyond<\/a>). <strong>Despite progress made in several member states, many nations continue to struggle with dropout rates that exceed this target, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and innovative strategies <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/op.europa.eu\/webpub\/eac\/education-and-training-monitor-2022\/en\/country-reports\/country-reports.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Education and Training Monitor 2023<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/project\/scirearly\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">SCIREARLY<\/a> project fits into this context, with the aim of <strong>analysing the root causes of early leaving of education and training (both implicit and explicit) and proposing effective solutions<\/strong> to ensure all young Europeans can complete their education and training and realise their full potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/resources\/scirearly-research-report\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Report \"Social Determinants of Underachievement in Europe\"<\/a> offers a comprehensive overview of the causes, consequences, and solutions implemented to address these issues. CESIE has contributed by drafting a detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/resources\/scirearly-policy-review-school-leaving\/\" title=\"\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Review of Local, Regional and\/or National Policies to tackles Early School Leaving \u2013 Italy<\/a>, which provides an in-depth analysis of the specific challenges and initiatives undertaken within the Italian context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of early leaving of education and training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Report identifies a range of interconnected factors that contribute to Early Leaving of Education and Training and academic failure. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Social and Economic Determinants<\/strong>: poverty, lack of adequate educational resources, and insufficient social support are among the primary causes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Family Issues<\/strong>: family distress and lack of support from family members can negatively influence academic performance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Individual Factors<\/strong>: mental and physical health problems, as well as lack of motivation, can lead to Early Leaving of Education and Training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consequences of early leaving of education and training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Report highlights the serious implications of Early Leaving of Education and Training, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Limited Job Opportunities<\/strong>: early leavers of education and training have fewer chances to access stable and well-paid jobs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Risk of Poverty<\/strong>: limited education increases the risk of living in poverty and reliance on welfare systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Health Issues<\/strong>: there is a correlation between low education levels and health problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reduced Civic Participation<\/strong>: early leavers of education and training tend to be less involved in political, social, and cultural life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased Crime Rates<\/strong>: lower education levels are associated with a higher risk of criminal behaviours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Effective interventions and policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its second section, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/resources\/scirearly-research-report\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Report<\/a> analyses various educational policies and practices that have proven effective in reducing Early Leaving of Education and Training rates. These interventions focus on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preventive Approaches<\/strong>: support programs for at-risk children and families.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interventions in Education and Training providers<\/strong>: improvements in teaching and training methodologies and psychological support for students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Compensatory Measures<\/strong>: strategies to reintegrate students who have left the educational and training path.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results of educational policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Report highlights the successes of various European countries that have implemented effective policies to tackle Early Leaving of Education and Training. Many of these countries have recorded a significant reduction in dropout rates and improvements in student academic outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges and future perspectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite progress, significant challenges remain. In particular, the inclusion of migrants and refugees in the education and training system requires further efforts.
