In recent years, the issue of women's empowerment has gained increasing prominence in public and political debate. The need to promote gender equality concerns not only the recognition of women's rights, but also the enhancement of their skills and the overcoming of structural obstacles that limit their active participation in all sectors of society. <\/strong>In this context, initiatives such as FEM-ABLE<\/a><\/strong> become crucial in raising awareness among the younger generation and fostering deep and lasting cultural change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 31, 2024, the FEM-ABLE project presentation event was held at the Department of Political Sciences of the University of Palermo (UNIPA). The meeting saw the participation of students from various disciplines, including political science and law, and featured speeches from 2 prominent figures from the local political scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women empowerment: experts\u2019 insights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The event was opened by Professor Manuela Patti, <\/strong>a Researcher in Contemporary History at UNIPA and an expert on women's movements, who warmly welcomed the participants, encouraging them to become more aware and sensitive to the event\u2019s theme.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the highlights of the event was the insightful talk by Milena Gentile<\/strong>, a prominent figure in the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage and the President of the Emily Palermo<\/a> Association since 2014. Her speech delved into the meanings of being a woman in politics, <\/strong>the opportunities available, and the role of the Emily association in promoting gender equality in Palermo. She also shared practical examples of successful women in politics and their challenges, providing a comprehensive understanding of the topic.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, Ninni Terminelli,<\/strong> a Lawyer and President of the Equal Opportunities Committee of the Palermo Bar Association addressed the issue of gender equality in the legal profession and forensic institutions, <\/strong>providing insight into the city's current situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contributions of the speakers, which spanned professional life and more personal experiences deeply rooted in the local culture, allowed the participants to learn about the perspectives of competent and active figures in the field of women empowerment and social justice in a broader sense.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

FEM-ABLE from the youth perspective: engaging students in the debate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The event also included active student involvement through informal participation methods. <\/strong>Through a quiz, we challenged participants' knowledge and perceptions about women's political participation in Italy and Europe. This was followed by an open debate, which focused on the disparities and obstacles to women's participation and political representation in Italy and Europe.<\/strong> This encouraged intergenerational dialogue and allowed students to interact directly with the experts, fostering a more engaging and dynamic atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topics discussed included the situation of female participation in Italy and the broader European context, reflections on the Gender Equality Index<\/a>, the use of gender quotas at the national level,<\/strong> and the challenges and opportunities they present, culminating in a dialogue on the obstacles to woman political participation at the regional and local levels.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was not just about the experts sharing their insights. It was a platform that empowered the younger generation to participate and contribute to the FEM-ABLE National Strategy. <\/strong>Their involvement was not just significant, but instrumental in disseminating the strategy to tomorrow's decision-makers and giving renewed impetus to the FEM-ABLE project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
