{"id":114732,"date":"2022-05-13T15:39:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T13:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cesie.org\/news\/my-id-approccio-integrato-diversita-sessuale-genere-scuola\/"},"modified":"2023-10-25T11:58:21","modified_gmt":"2023-10-25T09:58:21","slug":"my-id-integrated-approach-sexual-gender-diversity-shool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/school\/my-id-integrated-approach-sexual-gender-diversity-shool\/","title":{"rendered":"An integrated approach to address sexual and gender diversity at school"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sexual and gender orientation is still a sore subject<\/strong>, specially at school, and <strong>one of the main reasons for discrimination and social exclusion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Homophobic violence occurs regularly among young people and even more after the COVID-19 pandemic, during which episodes of intolerance and online hatred occurred frequently. In this context, <strong>schools play a key role in shaping the life paths of young people, as students begin to build their values and opinions during their school years<\/strong>. This is why <strong>schools are called upon to contribute to the promotion of equality and the prevention of discrimination.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sexual diversity is less visible than cultural diversity because it can be hidden and suffered in silence (Goffman 1963).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fra.europa.eu\/en\/publication\/2020\/eu-lgbti-survey-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Research by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) on LGBTI and gender discrimination in the European Union<\/a> highlighted the <strong>need to focus more explicitly on sexual orientation and gender education for young people.<\/strong> For this reason, <strong>teachers need to develop basic knowledge<\/strong> and receive <strong>adequate training to educate on gender issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/project\/my-id\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">My-ID<\/a> intends to <strong>support a comprehensive approach and specific educational actions to address intersectional discrimination and inequality<\/strong> experienced on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sexual characteristics in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project partners met on 5 and 6 May 2022 in Citt\u00e0 di Castello to start work and evaluate the first steps. Born from the experience of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/project\/sense\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">SENSE <\/a>project, the <strong>My-ID method<\/strong> was developed to address this issue and successfully tested with students from professional training institutes through <strong>concrete tools, activities and detailed instructions for teachers, students and parents.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically, the project will have a direct impact on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>students<\/strong>, who will be more aware of the importance of having <strong>social, personal and professional skills <\/strong>through <strong>classroom activities<\/strong> aimed at integrating gender sensitivity into specific subjects;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>teachers and other school staff<\/strong>, who will <strong>improve their skills to help create a safer and more inclusive environment at school.<\/strong> They will rely on a <strong>teacher guide and manual to initiate a process of awareness-raising <\/strong>dialogue and education on <strong>sexual and gender issues<\/strong>, and on the <strong>management of potential conflicts<\/strong> that result;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>parents and school staff<\/strong>, who will be aware that the school has an inclusive policy and that this includes gender sensitivity, providing them with <strong>guidance and suggestions on how to manage gender and sexual diversity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project comes at a <strong>crucial time for the European education system<\/strong>: the <a href=\"https:\/\/op.europa.eu\/en\/publication-detail\/-\/publication\/e15c4a50-855c-11ec-8c40-01aa75ed71a1\/language-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">EU Strategy for LGBTIQ+ Equality 2020-2025 <\/a>marks a <strong>new phase of mainstreaming LGBTIQ+ equality in all policy areas<\/strong> and aims to bring Member States together in a common effort to tackle LGBTIQ+ discrimination more effectively by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My-ID is therefore one of the concrete initiatives that will have an impact on future actions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your school is interested in the My-ID method, contact Irene Pizzo:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:irene.pizzo@cesie.org\">irene.pizzo@cesie.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-about-the-project\">About the project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cesie.org\/en\/project\/my-id\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">My-ID \u2013 My Identity, My Idea to be Myself<\/a> is financed by the Erasmus+ program,<strong>&nbsp;KA220-SCH -
