Interculturality and global citizenship are among the main objectives of 2030 Agenda, which now pays increasing attention to the creation of wider educational models.
How to teach students interculturality and global citizenship?
On 30th June 2021, a group of students from the secondary school IISS Alessandro Volta (Palermo) visited CESIE premises, in order to learn more about some of the initiatives offered by the School Unit in the field of intercultural education, through the use of non-formal teaching practices.
During the meeting, CESIE School Unit team presented different activities and methods of non-formal education, aimed to enhance students’ socio-emotional skills, as well as the creation of one’s own personal identity through emotions and meanings, focusing on reciprocal comprehension and on empathic attitudes towards the others.
The techniques of storytelling and symbol-work developed within KITE project were presented, as these are aimed to support youngsters to reflect, manage and store information about their personal life path, by focusing on specific details, such as their cultural and socio-cultural background. These moves can help them increase their cultural and personal awareness, in order to discover more about themselves and about others.
Gamification of the educational practices can contribute to this objective. Students from the IISS Volta experienced GEM IN board game and playing cards, both created to promote intercultural education, enhance knowledge of EU values, support the acquisition of interpersonal skills and strengthen active citizenship education through intercultural dialogue. In the following months, the project TEMSIC will produce new playing models centred upon the topics of social inclusion and global citizenship, aimed to increase students’ understanding of the surrounding world and of the others by fostering their teamwork and cooperation abilities through a board game.
Facilitating the creation of inclusive education promoting intercultural models is one of the fundamental objectives within TEACHmi project. Through TEACHmi, the students participating to the meeting could discover some activities to manage any cultural shock and overcome their stereotypes due to scarce knowledge of the other culture. Students could reflect on the huge significance of understanding others’ gestures and behaviours, abandoning their cultural filters and discovering the unique experience of empathy towards the others.
