Raising awareness and provide vocational training for professionals working with refugees and migrants, on matters related to medicine and intercultural communication.

Greece hosts around 100,000 refugees and migrants while almost 60% of them are women and children. The protracted containment in substandard conditions and ongoing uncertainty exacerbate physical and mental health issues in refugee and migrant communities, many of whom have already experienced traumatic events in their country of origin or during their journey to Greece.

In Italy, between January and May 2021, 10,000 migrants arrived by sea. During 2020, the number of migrants who stepped foot in Italy peaked in July at 7,100 people. In 2018, the main port where migrants arrived was Pozzallo in the South of Italy.

In Spain the number of migrants arriving by the sea is increasing even during the pandemic period. In 2020 nearly 40,000 new migrants arrived in Spain 30% more than in 2019. In the first three months in 2021 more than 4,000 migrants arrived in Spain.

The hosted population has various interactions with different actors, which often lack certain knowledge and expertise to comprehend and identify its heightened medical and pharmaceutical needs and concerns. In addition, the presence of large populations who are deeply relied on external assistance could often lead to tension, and miscommunication among the encounters. The particularly demanding and complex conditions faced when working with displaced populations demonstrates the importance of intercultural training and capacity building.
