Artists and adult educators will collaborate together through artistic projects focused on community development, as part of a new European project that will connect the fields of arts and adult education to support the recognition of art and culture as an important part of sustainable development across different communities, urban spaces and regions including rural areas and small cities.
The Fusion of Arts and Education (FAE) project aims to support artists and adult educators to work together in a community, in a special region or in an urban space in order to foster the development of that area by motivating the people living there to participate, giving them a voice and a space to express themselves in order to build social trust and dialogue and increase democratic participation. Local artistic projects to be decided by leading artists together with the adult educators and the local community will be piloted across Germany, Italy, Portugal and Austria.
Arts and culture have experienced significant economic setbacks from COVID-19. The urgent need to address the pandemic’s impact on artists and arts organisations, to improve the working conditions and new working fields of artists, whilst fostering active citizenship, democratic participation and democratic development of society is a main goal of FAE.
Partners of the project representing artist-led organisations and non-profit organisations active in the cultural and creative sectors from Germany, Italy, Portugal and Austria came together for the first time on 17th April to launch the project and plan the next steps.
Over the two-year duration, FAE will produce the following results:
- Research study about the state of art of the use of art and artists in adult education;
- Descriptive and illustrative collection of best practices of successful pilot artistic projects and a critical summary with tips for pedagogical practice to teach adult education providers the benefits of using art and artists as creative participatory tool in their work;
- Policy recommendations based on the evaluation and reflection of the pilot projects that will support future cooperation with adult educators and artists showing what competences are needed to make such projects work.
Partners are now conducting research in their countries to assess the use of art and artists in adult education activities and to assess the needs of educators as well as educational organisations and institutions that provide adult training. The research findings will be used as the starting point for the project to define the needs of the target groups. It will investigate the advantages of art compared to teacher-centred education, as well as help spread scientific knowledge about the use of art and artists within adult education providers and with interested individuals.
