The Sex-Ed Council in Palermo has been active for a year now. What have we done in this first year with Love Act? How will we move forward?
The Council on Sexuality and Affectivity Education was officially launched during the Pride Village in 2023. Since then it has gathered around 25 members, including local organisations and experienced professionals (psychologists, educators).
In this first year we worked as a local network to respond to the many requests for educational interventions from schools in the city. During the school year 2023-2024, we carried out 15 educational interventions in 4 different schools, coordinating within the network according to the availability of members. In addition to CESIE, organisations such as: Non Una Di Meno Palermo, SISM Palermo, Arcigay Palermo, ANLAIDS, Famiglie Arcobaleno and the Danilo Dolci Centre for Creative Development.
By March 2024 we had trained about 30 teachers and educators on the topics of sexuality and affectivity education: relationships, gender education, combating gender-based violence, intersectional aspects related to disabilities and cultural background. During the next school year they themselves will carry out the activities with l3 their students.
We have also actively participated in a number of city mobilisations against gender-based violence: on 17 May during the International Day against Homolesbobtransphobia; on 9 September during the TiRissiNo demostration launched by Non Una Di Meno in response to episodes of gender-based violence in Palermo and Catania; and on 24 November during the International Day for the Elimination of Gender-based Violence.
Throughout the year, we have been working on the construction of our Manifesto: a document co-created by all members that tells the values, principles and areas of intervention of the Council in the long term.
It will be published by the end of the year so stay tuned!
