How can we contribute to reconciliation and dialogue among younger generations in the Western Balkans by addressing collective trauma and overcoming divisive, nationalistic narratives?
For EU CARES, it is the training of youth workers in storytelling techniques that can play a crucial role in reconciliation and dialogue. Through storytelling, in fact, young people can express their experiences, fears, and hopes in ways that foster mutual understanding. Shared narratives have the potential to challenge and overcome nationalistic and divisive narratives, instead promoting stories that emphasize common values, empathy, and social cohesion.
Between 26 and 29 June 2024, the Department of “Cultures and Societies” of the University of Palermo The International Conference “Narratives and the Social Sciences. Interdisciplinary Perspectives“, a multidisciplinary meeting aimed at presenting research, studies and experiences conducted in the field of narratives, Storytelling and counter-narratives.
The team that has been working on the EU-CARES project for about two years presented the results of the six-day workshop held at Kamera Photo Lab in May 2024.
The results were appreciated by scholars and enthusiasts, and we couldn’t be happier with the impact that the project had on the territory: a group of people passionate about photography, led by photographer Carlotta Magliocco, experimented with still-life, portrait and photo reportage techniques.
The project produced results of interest at the academic level for the study of visual storytelling as a dynamic of conflict resolution through the narration of conflicts and the use of multilingualism practices.
The meeting concluded with a promise to produce a scholarly article so that the good practices of sharing and co-creating narratives developed within EU-CARES can feed the sociological literature.
