Which methods can be adopted to empower teachers above 50 years to use technology more in their everyday teaching?
Europe is currently suffering from an ageing population as a result of the baby boom of the 1960s. In 2020, one out of three Europeans will be over 50 years old, which means 41.5% of the total population. This is why the idea of maintaining the physical, mental and social activity of adults during all stages of their ageing (from early onset to late maturity) is being more emphasized. In the frame of the European measures concerning active ageing, training initiatives aimed at older people are included, in which new technologies play a very important role. It is a fact that E-learning helps in the process of active ageing.
D-Upskill.50 project aims to increase adult educators self-awareness on the skills and competences gaps in the area of digital pedagogical competence and increase their confidence in integrating technologies into their teaching practice. To achieve this, the project partners will create a self-assessment tool, electronic guides and a VideoBook platform.
On the 28th, 29th and 30th of September the project partners met in Athens, hosted by Active Citizens Partnerships, to participate in learning and training activities. Adult educators interested in expanding the topic of adult education, and those who have been personally involved in the Upskill.50 project attended.
The activity aimed to be a way to approach and embrace the digital transformation process by sharing best teaching practices between peers, and jointly develope the tools and resources that can support the teachers who need it the most. During the two days, the partners analyzed the needs and gaps per country, considering the testimonials of participants. Furthermore, the partners brainstormed on new ideas, relevant content, and design for the self-assessment tool as well as deciding concrete questions that the self-assessment tools will include. The Smart Digital Health-Check Tool will consist in an online dynamic questionnaire (web responsive) that will be focused on exploring the four pedagogical digital skills that have been identified in the DigCompEdu and that we consider the most relevant ones for a further analysis:
- Digital resources
- Teaching and learning
- Assessment
- Empowerment strategies for learners
