Can positivity increase your chances of employability?

Traditionally schools, being a formal educational institutions and focusing on students’ academic achievements, have largely neglected other aspects of students’ development.

Skills, such as emotional, social and other life skills, have been left at the back stage even if those skills prepare students for a successful transition from school to university and the labour market.

Since students’ wellbeing, character strengths and social skills have drawn little attention and concern across European schools, SUCCESS project partners decided to address this gap by introducing innovative interventions combining positive psychology approach with basic employability skills development.

What is Positive Psychology?

Positive Psychology is the scientific study of optimal human functioning that seeks to discover and promote factors that allow individuals, communities and societies to thrive and flourish.

What are Employability skills?

Employability skills are typically considered essential qualifications for many job positions and hence have become necessary for an individual’s employment success. These skills such as teamwork, communication, self-management, are highly valued by employers, often far more than educational qualifications offered by formal education.

SuCCESS Objectives

The SUCCESS project – Strategies to Utilise and Cultivate Positive Characteristics & Employability Skills in Schools will apply the principles, methods and techniques of positive psychology to develop so needed basic employability skills.

The goal of SUCCESS is:

  • to create an innovative training package which will include practical tools, activities and exercises to build employability skills and positive characteristics that can be applied by school counsellors;
  • support students after they graduate from high schools.

The SUCCESS project partners met in Vilnius (Lithuania) on 24-25 October 2017, hosted by the project coordinator Vilnius University. They planned future project activities and positive interventions.
During the 2 years of the SUCCESS project the partners will:

  • Conduct Current Needs analysis of School Counsellors to identify trends, services and best practices related to school counsellors, non-formal education and training based on positive psychology approach at national and international levels.
  • Design and develop SUCCESS Training Package: SUCCESS Handbook for School Counsellors and High School Students and Guide to the Handbook.
  • Develop SUCCESS Online Educational Platform containing information about the project’s objectives, training methodology and the SUCCESS educational package.

We, SUCCESS project partners, are concerned that it is needed to focus more on the positive approach of humans, invest in their strengths rather than their weaknesses, emphasise positive emotions, strengthen psychological resilience and the search of the meaning of life.
